Who? How? Where? What? When?Questions & Answers

Learn to dive

Learn freedom under water

This article answers your questions about learning to dive. In particular, we look at the two diving courses «PADI Discover Scuba Diving» and «PADI Open Water Diver». Both courses can be attended by someone without any knowledge about diving. Both diving courses can be booked throughout the year. We explain the differences and the details here.

What is PADI?

«Professional Association of Diving Instructors», short PADI, ist

is the largest diver training organisation in the world. We, TSK Bern and TSK Zurich, are PADI dive centres and offer courses according to the PADI system. There are many other dive training organisations, but 30 years ago we decided to join the best known and most widely used. That is why our courses have the word "PADI" in their name.

Often you hear the phrase "I did the PADI on holiday" - strictly speaking this statement is wrong, because PADI is an organisation and not a single course or certification. Most often, the PADI Open Water Diver certification is meant (see below).

PADI Discover Scuba Diving Course - The Introductory Dive

Who is this diving course for?

To get a first impression of diving, you can attend the introductory diving course, called PADI Discover Scuba Diving. This course is especially suitable for people who are not sure whether they feel comfortable under water and whether they enjoy diving at all. As the name suggests, it is a "taster" course and there are no performance requirements that need to be passed.

What are the requirements to participate in this course?

  • Good swimming skills
    • You don't have to be a competitive swimmer, but let's put it this way: you have to be able to swim. :)
  • Good health
    • Completion of a medical questionnaire is obligatory (we will be happy to send it to you) by mail, if you want to have a look at it already)
  • Minimum age 10 years

How long does this course take?

The course takes about two hours in total. If we add the journey to/from the indoor pool, it can be about three hours in total.

Where does this course take place?

IIn Bern, the course takes place in the warm months (approx. May to October) in our own outdoor pool behind the dive centre. In the colder months and in Zurich all year round, the course takes place in an indoor pool.

What do I need to bring to the course?

Your swimsuit with all the trimmings.

I wear glasses. Is that a problem?

If you have contact lenses, take them with you - you can dive with them without any problems. If you don't have contact lenses and have a very severe correction, let us know when you register.

Do I have to prepare specifically for the course?

After registration, you will receive a form from us together with the confirmation, which you must fill out in advance. You bring this form with you to the course. But that's all there is to it.

What will I learn in this course?

Primarily, you learn to breathe under water and familiarise yourself with the diving equipment. The first movements under water are a unique experience that you should enjoy.

What is the course of the diving course like?

After a short briefing, it's straight into the water. The equipment is already assembled for this. During the briefing you will learn what you have to pay attention to and what exactly happens in the water. The aim of the course is to spend as much time as possible in the water so that you get an adequate impression of diving. Whether you "play Frisbee" under water or already do some exercises depends on your wishes on the one hand and on how comfortable you already feel under water on the other. After the dive in the pool, you will receive a debriefing from the diving professional and be shown your further options.

Do I have to see a doctor first?

If you have to answer "yes" to any of the questions in the "Medical Questionnaire" form, you will also need to bring a diving fitness certificate. For this you will go to your family doctor who will examine and certify your fitness for diving. Reasons for requiring such a certificate are, for example, a previous ear or sinus operation, high blood pressure or diabetes.

Will I receive a certification after the course?

After completing the course (within seven days) you will receive a certificate from PADI confirming that you have attended the course. However, it is not a diving certificate (see next question/answer).

What am I "allowed" to do after the course?

To be honest: nothing yet. The course is only an introductory course and is primarily intended to help you find out whether you enjoy diving. From a diving point of view, this course does not qualify you for anything. The course you'll need to conduct is «PADI Open Water Diver».

What happens after the course if I like diving?

Now it can "really" start. Book the course «PADI Open Water Diver» and become a certified diver. You can find all the information in the next section.

Who is this course for?

What are the requirements to participate in this course?

  • Good swimming skills
    • You don't have to be a competitive swimmer, but let's put it this way: you have to be able to swim. :)
  • Good health
    • a diving fitness certificate is required (see below)
  • Minimum age 10 years
    • up to the age of 15 you will receive the "PADI Junior Open Water Diver" certification, which has exactly the same course content as the adult certification - there are only a few restrictions regarding the depth and the escort on the dive (see below).

How long does this course take?

The course lasts at least four full days. Normally, however, the course takes place over four half days (or evenings) and two full days. This does not include the personal time spent studying the theory. If the course is taken in a dry suit (especially in the colder months of November to April), an additional day is necessary.

Was lerne ich in diesem Kurs?
